EMPIRES OF INDUSTRY, Leaves of Gold ~~~ $24.95 vhs

50 minutes. 1998. Middle school, high school.

The years just after the Civil War saw Durham's Washington Duke and his son, James Buchanan Duke, begin to establish what would become a major empire. Among other things, they popularized the “new” cigarette. However, competition from Winston-Salem's R.J. Reynolds followed and the two went head-to-head marketing to the American public. Before Congress banned television tobacco advertising in 1970, the Philip Morris Company had also risen to power through effective advertising campaigns. This video is an entertaining and effective tool for demonstrating many economic principles.
