Alexander and his father are spending Spring Break in
Durham, North Carolina, with the woman his father will
soon marry and her children. He thinks he may have been
led to North Carolina for another reason and discovers
that indeed he has when the group visits a Civil War
battlefield. After slipping back in time to a battle,
Alexander unknowingly returns to the present with
Richeson, a ghost from the battle who needs his help.
Alexander's quest to find Richeson's family takes him to
Raleigh and Research Triangle Park, and despite the
difference in time, also reveals similarities between the
two boys, including pain and grief caused by family
members they will never see again. Civil War adventure,
family struggles, and supernatural encounters combine to
create an interesting story that can effectively bridge
language arts and North Carolina studies.
