Hooray for Heroines is a North Carolina book so long overdue that many readers will shout "Hurrah!" for its publication. It gives names and faces to Tar Heel women who reacted to wartime danger on their doorsteps.

During the Revolution they fought Tories and King George's troops with words, wits and weapons of homemade sorts. When Union soldiers stormed the south during the Civil War, they said they had a tough time combatting interference by scrappy "she-rebels."
