Born in Statesville, NC in 1921, Theodore Taylor moved to Portsmouth , Virginia when he was twelve. He got his formal education in the newsrooms of four daily newspapers beginning at the age of thirteen, earning fifty cents a week in 1934. During this time he began visiting the Outer Banks and began doing research for three books that would become the Outer Banks trilogy. A veteran of World War II, his many books for children, young adults, and adults often mirror sea battles and salty characters. His first book was published in 1954, the same year he joined Paramount Pictures as a press agent, soon to enter production. For three years, Taylor lived and traveled in the Caribbean, the setting of The Cay, his best-known and best-selling novel.
