NORTH CAROLINA'S HAUNTED HUNDRED, Barefoot, Daniel W. ~~~ 3 volumes $25.85 pb

120 pgs each. 2002. Middle school, high school.

NORTH CAROLINA'S HAUNTED HUNDRED is divided into three volumes - SEASIDE SPECTRES, PIEDMONT PHANTOMS, and HAINTS OF THE HILLS - one for each of the Tar Heel state's main geographic regions.

Barefoot takes readers deep into the Great Dismal Swamp to introduce what may have been the only Bigfoot ever captured. He visits the North Carolina Zoological park, and the spirit of the Confederate recruiter who once hunted deserters there. He descends into the deep mountain valleys of Cherokee County to confront a legendary giant leech.

“Instead of retelling the timeless ghost stories so well chronicled,” Barefoot says, “I have chosen to present many tales that have never been widely circulated in print. I include a few of the familiar tales of our ghostly lore in the mix, but with new information or a new twist.”
