THE TAR HEEL STATE: A History of North Carolina, Ready, Milton — $39.95

Upper elementary (teacher reference), middle school, high school
In the last three decades North Carolina has witnessed a remarkable growth in population, economic development, and political importance, and it now ranks as the tenth most populous state in the Union. THE TAR HEEL STATE: A History of North Carolina constitutes the most comprehensive and inclusive single-volume chronicle of the state’s storied past to date, culminating with an attentive look at recent events that have transformed North Carolina into a southern megastate.
Ready’s work offers a distinctive view of the state’s history that integrates tales of famous pioneers, statesmen, soldiers, farmers, captains of industry, and community leaders with more marginalized voices, including those of Native American, African Americans, and women. Ready gives readers a view of North Carolina that encompasses perspectives from the coast, “tobacco road,” the Piedmont, and the mountains.
Ready revisits dramatic struggles of the American Revolution and the Civil War, the early history o f Cherokees, the rise of industrial mills, and the changes wrought by modern information-based technologies since 1970. Mixing spirited anecdotes and illustrative statistics, ready describes the rich Native American culture found by John White in 1585, the chartered chaos of North Carolina’s proprietary settlement. He challenges the perception of the “Rip van Winkle” state and the commonly accepted interpretation of Reconstruction. From the civil rights struggle to the building of the research triangles, triads, and parks, he recounts events that have fueled North Carolina’s accelerated development in recent years.

DEAR MR. ROSENWALD, Weatherford, Carole Boston ~~~ $16.99

32 pgs. full-color illus.. 2006. Elementary, middle school.

Grade 2-5–Set in the rural South in the early 1920s, this simple, respectful story examines one community's efforts to build a new school for African-American children with seed money provided by the Julius Rosenwald Fund. Each spread features a prose poem told in the voice of a student. Readers learn about the difficult decision to accept the challenge–which the Sears Roebuck executive extended to more than 5000 communities–and then to build a decent schoolhouse for the children of sharecroppers and other poor families. Land, lumber, and labor were all donated or purchased cheap; cast-off books and furnishings from more affluent communities appeared; and within a year, the students who used to study in a drafty shack walked into the first building they could truly call their own. Christie's gouache and colored-pencil illustrations have the variegated look and stylized layout of collage art–a good complement to the child's rough-around-the-edges narration. An afterword explains Rosenwald's impact on thousands of poor black communities. An uplifting and inspiring story about the buildings that are all too frequently taken for granted.

PALE AS THE MOON unfolds in the 16th century on one of the small, sandy Outer Banks islands off the North Carolina coast. This is the tale of the enduring friendship between a young Indian girl, Gray Squirrel, and a wild Outer Banks pony. Told primarily from the viewpoint of the visionary young girl, the book examines the tenuous relationship between the native Indians and the English colonists who settled on Roanoke Island.
