MORAVIAN CHRISTMAS IN THE SOUTH,
Thomas, Nancy Smith ~~~ $29.95
200 pgs., 128 illus., 2007, index Upper elementary, middle school,
high school
The Moravian Church was one of the earliest Protestant religious
groups in the United States. In 1752 the church bought 100,000
acres in Piedmont North Carolina, calling the tract “Wachovia”
because the land reminded them of the Wachau valley of Austria.
Christmas customs practiced by the Moravians reflect their Germanic
roots, Nancy Smith Thomas explains. This abundantly illustrated
volume explores the many facets of traditional Moravian Christmas
celebrations, including decorations (such as the idiosyncratic
“Putz”), food and beverages, gifts, services, and
music. Thomas discusses how these traditions evolved over time,
within and outside the Moravian communities, as well as how certain
non-Moravian Christmas traditions were incorporated into the Moravian
customs.

NORTH CAROLINA IN THE CONNECTED AGE,
Walden, Michael L. — $30.00 Available
October 2008
400 pgs. 2008, Middle school, high school
Today we are living in a technologically connected age that has
completely transformed the North Carolina economy, Walden explains.
Once driven by tobacco, textiles, and furniture, the North Carolina
economy now thrives on technology, pharmaceuticals, finance, food
processing, and the manufacture of vehicle parts. While the state
as a whole has benefited from these dramatic transformations, some
population groups and regions have not experienced consistent economic
growth. Walden identifies education as the key factor; a skilled,
college-educated work force, he argues, is now a region’s
most prized commodity. Curriculum Applications: 8th Grade

THE BATTLES FOR FORT
FISHER, Fryar, Jack E.
~~~ $10.95 pb
36 pgs , Illustrated, 2006, elementary, middle school
By late in the Civil War, Robert E. Lee’s
army depended on the port at Wilmington to provide it with almost
everything. Lee plainly said that if Wilmington fell, he could
not keep his army in the field. The leaders of the Union army
and navy knew it, too. That’s why on Christmas Eve, 1864,
they launched a massive assault on Fort Fisher, the huge earthen
fort at the southern tip of modern New Hanover County, which guarded
access to the Cape Fear River. The attack was a failure, but two
weeks later the Union fleet was back. This time the battle would
decide once and for all who would control the South’s most
vital port. Whoever did would win the war. This is the story of
those two pivotal Civil War battles and the men who fought them,
lavishly illustrated with color pictures and photographs. It is
an ideal way to introduce young readers to the drama of America’s
bloodiest war as it happened along the North Carolina coast!
"KING
GEORGE AND BROADSWORDS": The Story of the Battle at Widow
Moores Creek, Fryar, Jack E.
~~~ $11.95 pb
36pgs. full color illus., 2006. Elementary, middle
school.
In 1776, America was a country at war with itself.
British soldiers had shot colonial militia at Lexington and Concord,
only to be shot in return by Massachusetts farmers and Minutemen
on the long march back to Boston. In North Carolina, people were
divided between those who wanted to remain loyal to King George
III, and those who were ready to break away from Great Britain
to form their own nation. North Carolina’s Royal Governor,
Josiah Martin, had fled from New Bern’s fabulous Tryon Palace
to the safety of a British warship anchored in the Cape Fear River.
From there, he made a plan to put down the rebellion in the South
with an army of Highlanders. Patriots who wanted a break with
England wanted to stop that army. In February 1776, the two sides
came together in a brief, fierce clash at a small creek in modern
Pender County. It would be the first patriot victory against the
British in the South, and the battle’s outcome would shake
governments on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. This is the story
of that clash.

THE YELLOW DEATH : Wilmington and the Yellow
Fever Epidemic of 1862, Fryar, Jack E. —
$10.95 pb
32 pgs. illustrated 2007, Elementary, middle school
Before the coming of modern medicine, people living near the swampy
coastal areas of North Carolina were frequently plagued by diseases
that left many sick and dead. One of the worst of these was yellow
fever. Carried by mosquitoes, the disease was a mystery to doctors
until 1898. While the Civil War raged throughout the country, and
Union warships stood offshore to stop the blockade runners making
for the Confederate port at Wilmington, the city was full of soldiers
and speculators, sailors, slaves and citizens. Before the yellow
fever epidemic ended in November, a full third of Wilmington’s
population would be dead.

Billy Graham rose from humble beginnings in rural North Carolina
to become one of the world’s most famous evangelists. Born
in 1918, Graham grew up on his family’s farm. During the
Great Depression of the 1930s, his strict Presbyterian parents
grew more religious. Graham attended church meetings with them
out of duty, but one night a particularly fiery Baptist preacher
ignited his faith. At age 15, he committed his life to Christ.
Graham received his first chance to preach while still a student
at the Florida Bible Institute. He delivered his sermon in such
rapid fire, it was over in just eight minutes. But with study
and practice, Graham perfected his style and launched an impressive
career. During his lifetime, Graham has preached directly to more
than two hundred million people in almost two hundred countries
and has reached millions more through radio, television, movies,

brutal times of slavery. “That is what Virginia Hamilton

DEAR MR. ROSENWALD, Weatherford,
Carole Boston ~~~ $16.99
32 pgs. full-color illus.. 2006. Elementary, middle school.
AR 4.2 LG
Set in the rural South in the early 1920s,
this simple, respectful story examines one community's efforts
to build a new school for African-American children with seed
money provided by the Julius Rosenwald Fund. Each spread features
a prose poem told in the voice of a student. Readers learn about
the difficult decision to accept the challenge–which the
Sears Roebuck executive extended to more than 5000 communities–and
then to build a decent schoolhouse for the children of sharecroppers
and other poor families. Land, lumber, and labor were all donated
or purchased cheap; cast-off books and furnishings from more affluent
communities appeared; and within a year, the students who used
to study in a drafty shack walked into the first building they
could truly call their own. Christie's gouache and colored-pencil
illustrations have the variegated look and stylized layout of
collage art–a good complement to the child's rough-around-the-edges
narration. An afterword explains Rosenwald's impact on thousands
of poor black communities. An uplifting and inspiring story about
the buildings that are all too frequently taken for granted.

more than seven years. Unbeknownst to Joseph, his mother, Harriet,
has been hiding from her owner in the attic of the house that
Joseph lives in. But when Harriet's hiding place is in danger
of being revealed, she is forced to flee north to safety only
moments after being reunited with her family.
Devastated by losing his mother for the second time,
Joseph begins to ponder the nature of the world he lives in. Soon
Joseph, seeking freedom and a place where he can be himself, follows
his mother north. As he searches for answers, Joseph experiences
life in Massachusetts, California, Australia, and aboard a whaling
ship -- but there's no place where Joseph feels that he can truly
be free.
In this companion novel to Letters from a Slave

told through letters imagined by the author. Based on the real-life

When Celeste Lassiter Massey must travel to Harlem to live with
her actress Aunt Valentina, she's not thrilled at all to leave
her friends, home and Poppa in comfortable Raleigh, North Carolina
for New York's 1921 fast life.
While Celeste absorbs the grit and glamour of Aunt Valentina's
lifestyle and the excitement of the Harlem Renaissance, she constantly
wonders and worries about Poppa, her friends, and even her cranky
Aunt Society (her Raleigh live-in aunt-in-charge) back home.
Talk about dangers, hard work, and romance! What about that fine,
bald-headed boy Big Willie from Eagle Rock, NC that she meets
on the train to Harlem? Will she ever see him again?
And what about Miss D (Miz Ripsey Dillahunt), a Gullah lady from
the islands around Charleston, SC, who helps Celeste understand
Aunti Val? And what about Miss D's looney 8-year-old granddaughter
Gertie, who thinks folks get tapeworms from drinking milk?
Will Celeste ever see North Carolina again? And will she ever
have to deal with ole Aunt Society again???

GENTLE’S HOLLER, Madden, Kerry
~~~$6.99 pb
272 pgs, 2007 Upper elementary, middle school AR 5.1 MG
From Booklist Gr. 5-8. Livy Two, named for her
deceased sister Olivia, is one of nine siblings living in the
North Carolina mountains during the 1960s. With her head-in-the-clouds,
banjo-playing father and an overworked, perpetually pregnant mother,
Livy Two assumes many of the child-care and household responsibilities.
Still, she has time to dream of future travels, a home of her
own, and her own country-music hits. Her worry over blind little
sister Gentle dampens her dreams, but she finds creative solutions
with the family’s minimal resources. In spite of the poverty
and hardships, this is a family story that’s full of love
and delight. The parents have a visible, strong, working marriage,
something often ignored in children’s books. Their love
and acceptance keep the children secure, even in their hunger,
and gradually smoothes extended family members’ rough edges.
Taken individually, these characters are very human, but together
they form a strong unit that will help readers understand what
it means to be a family. FrancesBradburn
to the library is a delightfully useful teaching aid.
L IS FOR LIBRARY, Terry,
Sonya ~~~ $17.95
32 pgs. full-color illus. 2006. Elementary, middle school.
An endearing orange tabby leads children on an alphabetical tour
of the library. Rhyming couplets that for the most part flow nicely
give readers an overview, with equal emphasis on print and nonprint
resources, fiction, nonfiction, and reference. C is for the Caldecott,/awarded
for art that pleases the eyes./D is for the Dewey Decimal System,/which
helps us organize. The feline is accompanied by the ducklings
from Robert McCloskey's classic Make Way for Ducklings,
who perch on the cat's head as it peruses magazines, make xerox
copies of their webbed feet, and otherwise cavort in amusing ways.
The library depicted is warm and inviting, with a multiethnic
group of children (and historical figures) obviously enjoying
themselves and excited by their surroundings. The illustrations
employ a soft but varied palette and are replete with details
that add interest and humor to the text. This would make an excellent
first-time-in-the-library book, but it will be enticing to children
throughout the year as well.–From School Library Journal
