THE SUITCASES: Three Orphaned Sisters and the Great Depression in the South, Whitt, Anne Hall ~~~ $15.00

Forward by Charles Kuralt. 184 pgs. 1997 reprint. i Upper elementary, middle school, high school.

Set in Charlotte and at Crossnore School in the Blue Ridge Mountains during the Great Depression, this beautifully written autobiography recounts the experiences of Anne Hall Whitt who, with her two sisters, became a ward of the state when she was only six. The only stabilizing element in their lives is the cardboard suitcase each keeps under her bed. It's an excellent read-aloud for the upper elementary/middle school levels.
